Wake up and grind the coffee!

Today we are drinking a Peruvian, medium roast coffee. It is orgainic, fair trade and roasted to a full city roast in a hot air roaster…in the garage.

A couple of thoughts.

When possible, don’t pre-grind your coffee or buy it ground. You can buy a basic electric grinder for not much more than $10. Grind it when you are ready to brew. Better electric grinders are burr grinders and the durable ones will be $50 and up. More on this later.

The roast you choose makes a big difference. Some coffees are more suited to a certain roast…lighter or darker. Lighter and medium roasts (city roast, etc…) tend to showcase the ‘origin’ qualities of a given coffee while darker roasts (vienna, french, etc…) tend to showcase the roast qualities. More on this later too.

However you end up roasting at home you want to do it in a well ventelated place. It tends to get smoky. If you have a very strong kitchen fan with a hood you might be in good shape. Otherwise, consider the porch, patio, outside, or the garage with the outside door open.
