Once I read a bit about buying green beans, roasting methods. roasters, roasts, coffee origins it a couple of things became abundantly clear. First, coffee roasting is relatively simple. I recognize that being a master roaster is not simple but given that it use to be a household chore like making bread, anyone who wants to roast coffee is cabable of doing it. The second thing that struck me is that one could spend a lot of money on roasting coffee at home…but it isn’t necessary.
I still wasn’t sure if this was for me. I knew I wanted to try it before buying a lot of coffee. So, I began calling the local shops that roast their own coffee until I found one that would sell me some green beans. I bought a half pound of two origins I knew I had liked in the past. I started with some Sumatran and some Ethiopian beans. These promptly sat on the counter for a month before I had the nerve to try roasting it….or the time to figure out just how I would do that.
